Ten US states (plus Guam) have container deposit laws: 10 cents in Michigan, Oregon and Connecticut; 5 cents in New York, Massachusetts, Iowa, Vermont and Hawaii; 5 or 10 cents in California by size; up to 15 cents on liquor in Maine and Vermont. Deposit states recycle containers at two to three times the rate of non-deposit states, and the material is clean enough for bottle-to-bottle use.

The Container Recycling Institute's bottlebill.org tracks current and proposed laws state by state, including the long-running push to raise New York's nickel to a dime.
