5 Gyres does peer-reviewed research on plastic in the ocean, runs the TrashBlitz community-data programme (78,631 items logged in 2025) and supports state and federal plastics bills (14 in 2025). Donations fund science, expeditions and policy work.
It is a 501(c)(3) with Employer Identification Number 27-1350279, holds a Candid Platinum seal (2026) and publishes financials on its site. Honest caveat: the TrawlShare citizen-sampling programme we were asked about no longer has a page on the site and appears to have been retired; do not expect to borrow a trawl.
