The Deposit Scheme for Drinks Containers (England and Northern Ireland) Regulations 2025 (SI 2025/67) come into force on 1 October 2027, when customers will pay a refundable deposit on single-use drinks containers made of PET plastic, aluminium and steel between 150 ml and 3 litres; provisions on registration and the administrator applied from 24 January 2025. Glass is excluded. The scheme administrator is the UK Deposit Management Organisation, trading as Exchange for Change, appointed in May 2025; the deposit level has been reported as 20p but is set by the administrator rather than the regulations.

Scotland is aligned: SSI 2025/188 moved the commencement of its own 2020 regulations to 1 October 2027. The regulations were debated in Lords Grand Committee on 20 January 2025 and approved in the Commons on 21 January 2025 (moved by Mary Creagh; Ayes 352, Noes 75).

Status as at September 2026: adopted, with regulations made and the administrator appointed; not yet operating. Dates verified against SI 2025/67 and SSI 2025/188 (legislation.gov.uk) on 23 September 2026.
