South Australia single-use plastics bans

South Australia was the first Australian state to ban single-use plastics, from 1 March 2021, and has since extended the list in annual tranches to polystyrene foam, cutlery and straws attached to packaging, and the small fish-shaped soy-sauce containers.

South Australia's Single-use and Other Plastic Products (Waste Avoidance) Act 2020 passed Parliament on 9 September 2020 after the House of Assembly second reading on 3 and 4 June 2020 (David Speirs, Minister for Environment and Water) and the Legislative Council debate on 8 September 2020. The first bans, on plastic straws, cutlery and stirrers, commenced on 1 March 2021.

Later tranches followed on 1 March 2022 (expanded polystyrene cups, bowls, plates and clamshells, oxo-degradable plastics), 1 September 2023 (plastic-stemmed cotton buds, single-use bowls and plates, pizza savers (the small plastic tripods in pizza boxes)), 1 September 2024 (barrier and thick bags, single-use cups and food containers, EPS trays, confetti, balloon sticks and ties, bag tags) and 1 September 2025 (small fish-shaped soy-sauce containers, cutlery and straws attached to packaging, pre-packaged EPS cups and bowls). The planned ban on plastic produce stickers was paused in June 2025 and there is no 2026 ban tranche; from 1 March 2026 certified compostable containers must be clearly marked to keep their exemption.
