The Federal Plastics Registry was set up by a notice under section 46 of the Canadian Environmental Protection Act, 1999, published in the Canada Gazette Part I on 20 April 2024. Companies must report the plastic they put on the market if the amount is 1,000 kg a year or more. Reports on 2024 were due by 29 September 2025, reports on 2025 by 29 September 2026, and reports on 2026 are due by 29 September 2027.
A notice published on 14 March 2026 narrowed the duty for 2025 and 2026 to producers of plastic packaging, electrical and electronic equipment, and single-use or disposable products that end up in household waste. Reporting by resin makers, waste firms and other sectors was postponed until 2027 at the earliest. The government says it intends to publish some of the information, and companies can ask for parts to be kept confidential.
Status as at September 2026: in force for the first group of producers; no registry data published yet. Verified against the Canada Gazette notices of 20 April 2024 and 14 March 2026 and the Environment and Climate Change Canada registry page on 26 September 2026.
