How2Recycle Store Drop-Off (US plastic film)

Bags and film labelled Store Drop-Off can go to retailer bins, but a 2023 tracker study found most ended in landfill or overseas; the label was redesigned in 2025.

The How2Recycle Store Drop-Off label directs clean, dry polyethylene film and bags to bins at participating retailers (Target, Walmart, Lidl, Wegmans are named). In 2023 ABC News placed 46 trackers in Walmart and Target bins: 23 went to landfill or incinerators, seven to transfer stations, six never left the store, three went to south-east Asia and only four reached a US film recycler. The industry-funded directory of drop-off sites then went offline, and in 2025 How2Recycle redesigned the label without the chasing-arrows symbol.

Honest caveat: reports that Walmart and Target removed their bins could not be substantiated; both are still listed as participants. Treat store drop-off as better than the trash but not proven recycling, and avoid film where you can.
