The Plastic Shopping Bags Ban Act 2013 (No. 14 of 2013) prohibits retailers from supplying plastic shopping bags thinner than 35 microns; section 2 commenced the operative sections on 1 November 2013. The Act is enforced by the Environment Protection Authority (EPA) Tasmania. Compostable bags meeting AS 4736, resealable bags and heavier boutique bags are excluded.

A state-wide ban on other single-use plastics has been proposed in two stages: the government's discussion paper and survey closed on 1 October 2024, but no bill has been introduced and no dates have been set. The only single-use plastics ban operating in Tasmania is the City of Hobart Single-use Plastics By-law, in force from 1 July 2021 within the Hobart municipal area.

Status as at September 2026: bag ban in force; state-wide single-use plastics ban proposed with no legislation or commencement date. Dates verified against the Plastic Shopping Bags Ban Act 2013 (legislation.tas.gov.au) and the City of Hobart by-law page on 23 September 2026.
