Commission Regulation (EU) 2024/3190 bans the use of bisphenol A and other bisphenols including bisphenol S (BPS), bisphenol AF (BPAF) and tetrabromobisphenol A (TBBPA) in plastics, varnishes, coatings, printing inks and adhesives intended to contact food. It was published on 31 December 2024 and entered into force on 20 January 2025.
The prohibition itself commenced in phases under Article 9. After an 18-month transition it became binding for most single-use and reusable food-contact articles on 20 July 2026. A 36-month transition to 20 January 2028 applies to single-use articles for fruit, vegetables and fishery products, to articles with BPA coatings only on exterior metal surfaces and to professional repeat-use food-processing equipment. Articles lawfully placed on the market before each deadline may be filled and sold for a further 12 months, so the last sell-through ends in January 2029.
Status as at September 2026: in force; the main prohibition has applied since 20 July 2026 and the 36-month categories remain in transition. Dates verified against Regulation (EU) 2024/3190 (EUR-Lex) and the Food Packaging Forum's note on the 20 July 2026 deadline on 23 September 2026.
