Everyday swaps

Loose fruit and vegetables

The EU will ban single-use plastic packaging on fresh produce under 1.5 kg from 2030; choosing loose produce now avoids about a kilo of film a year.

Watch out for
Some film genuinely reduces food waste; the footprint of wasted food can exceed that of the packaging.

Buy loose fruit and vegetables, shop at greengrocers and markets, and avoid pre-packed trays and bagged salads where you can.

Produce packaging is typically 5 g of film or tray per item; four packed items a week avoided is around 1 kg a year. The EU Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation bans single-use plastic packaging on fresh produce under 1.5 kg from 1 January 2030, and Western Australia is already phasing out produce bags.

The catch: some packaging genuinely extends shelf life (cucumbers, berries), and food waste can carry a bigger footprint than the film; buy only what you will eat.
